When Google launched the Android powered Nexus One phone on January 5, 2010, Steve Jobs, Apple CEO responded to that development in a widely reported meeting with his employees in January 2010, At that meeting Steve Jobs made some scathing remarks about their rival Google. “He said we did not go into search but they entered the Phone business. Make no mistake: Google wants to kill the iphone. We wont let them” .In March 2010, Apple inc launched a proxy war by filling a patents infringement suit against HTC the Taiwanese company that made the Nexus phone one for Google. Bloomberg news reports that Apple has sold more than 50 million iPhones since its introduction. The latest version, iPhone 4, sold more than 1.7 million units in the first three days after its June 24 debut. In contrast Google has sold an estimated 135,000 Nexus One phones in the 74 days after it went on sale as compared to Apple which sold 1 million iPhones in the first 74 days of its existence in 2007.
The Nexus one phone has not matched Iphone sales at all. Also with the expected introduction of the Iphone on the Verizon network USA Today, newspaper reports that Apple Sales of the Iphone in the US would reach at least 15 million units next year from 11 million in 2010. Google however says that it is not trying to battle the iphone directly but is using the Nexus one to promote the the wide-ranging possibilities of its Android operating system. Evidently, Google’s Nexus One phone may not be able to match the Apple iphone in sales. However, Google’s Android operating system is currently fourth by market share amongst Smart phone operating systems. In addition, the Google’s Android operating system is ahead of Microsoft windows 7 and is poised to challenge the iPhone Os, Nokia’s Symbia and RIMS Blackberry. The Android Operating system is gaining in market share because handset manufacturers like HTC and Samsung are showing a preference for the Google’s Android, which is not only free but attracting a fast-growing developer community.
